Get Set Demonstrate

These resources were produced as part of National Science & Engineering Week 2013, following a competition to find the most popular science demonstrations.

Teachers and technicians nominated their favouriet video demonstrations, and judges then chose the best to be turned into videos with accompanying written guides. The aim is to encourage more use of inspiring science demonstrations in UK secondary schools.

The resources were funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

Pearls of Water

This is a visual way of illustrating the effects of gravitational acceleration. The demonstration separates the horizontal and vertical motion of a jet of water as it moves through the air.

As the horizontal motion of the water drops remains constant, this demonstrates that there are no horizontal forces...

Chip Pan Fire

This demonstration shows the dangers of adding water to a chip pan fire. A small quantity of cooking oil is heated in a nickel crucible over a Bunsen burner and then water is added to the oil, producing a dramatic fireball. The demonstration may be linked to combustion, fuels, fire safety in the home and rates of...

Iodine Clock

This video shows an eye-catching colour change demonstration in which a colourless solution suddenly changes to a dark-blue after an amount of time. It is known as the 'iodine clock' as there is a delay before the colour change. The demonstration is particularly well-suited as an introduction to reaction rates...

Pluck Dissection

This film shows how to carry out a dissection of a sheep pluck, showing the relative positions of the trachea, lungs and heart. This dissection focuses on the function of the breathing system, and a description is provided in the teachers' notes of how to inflate one of the lobes in the lungs via an incision made...
