Revised Nuffield Advanced Chemistry

In Revised Nuffield Advanced Chemistry, the basic aims and ideas of the first edition, the outline of the topics, and much of the detail remained the same. However, since the publication of the first edition there had been many developments in chemistry. New discoveries had been made; industrial processes had advanced; there had been changes in the way many chemicals are named, in the units in which many quantities were measured, in safety practises, and in a number of other matters. The second edition took account of these changes.

The main changes
• A very significant aspect of the revision was in the topics dealing mainly with physical chemistry. The opportunity was taken to include in these topics something on the Second Law of Thermodynamics derived from a statistical approach originally introduced in Nuffield Advanced Physics.

• The treatment of liquid-vapour equilibria, and of Raoult's law, was expanded, and to make time for this, the topic on solvation was omitted.
• The treatment of acid-base equilibria was separated from redox equilibria and brought forward to the new, enlarged Topic 12.
• The former Topic 17, on equilibria and free energy, was completely rewritten, and the subject matter brought forward to the revised Topic 15.
• The inorganic chemistry topics were rewritten so as to base the study of the chemical reactions of the elements even more firmly on the Periodic Table.
• The organic chemistry was extensively revised. The functional groups and the reactions to be studied did not differ greatly from the original publications, but the experimental work was much altered.
• A major innovation in the organic experimental work was the introduction of a number of preparations as optional alternatives to the week-long problem in synthesis.
• Another innovation was to introduce the classification of reactants as nucleophiles, electrophiles, or free radicals.
• More extensive reference was made to infra-red spectra and mass spectra.

There were eighteen topics in Revised Nuffield Advanced Chemistry divided into two, corresponding to the two years of a post-16 A-level course.

Towards the end of the Revised Nuffield Advanced Chemistry course, students made a four week study of a science that was based on chemical principles. The principal purpose of this section of the course was to enable students to see something of the scope of a related subject, and to appreciate its dependence upon...
