Boat Building, Balanced Forces and Floating
Discover why boats float and how to design a cardboard boat that will hold up to 9 kgs. Learn the meaning of displacement, discover the relationship betweeen the mass a boat carries and the water displaced. The physics of balanced forces involved in boat construction. Involved volume calculations, measuring and problem solving.
This can be linked cross curriculum to the the Mayflower, the Vikings and The Titanic.
Extension: Design and Build a life size boat and paddles large enough to carry up to 4 students.
Improved understanding of forces and how they influence boat design.
Understand the concept of balanced forces in terms of upthrust and load.
Developing Team work, Problem Solving and Resilience.
Develop maths and it's application to a real life problem in bulid and boat.
