House Of Maths

House Of Maths - Barney Maunder-Taylor

Outrageously fun and crammed with National Curriculum Mathematics, HOUSE OF MATHS will have your entire school buzzing about numeracy, shape and pattern, with hands-on investigations, enrichment mathematics, and plenty of questions for your students to ponder going forward.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Reception through to Year 8 (please email to ask about adult mathematics talks).

PRIMARY: a House Of Maths full-day visit will usually cater for your entire school in one day. Choose between maths Shows (up to 9 class sizes at a time), hands-on Workshops (one class-size at a time), or choose a combination of the two.

SECONDARY: a typical visit will consist of two separate 60 minute enrichment talks (whole of Year 7, whole of Year 8) followed by one 60 minute hands-on workshops (for one class size of up to 32 students e.g. top set, G&T).

SHOWS, TALKS AND ASSEMBLIES: covering number, shape, real life maths, problem solving and at Secondary we begin to see how algebra fits into the picture. All show involve large custom colourful props to bring the maths alive, and audience participation. House Of Maths provides the P.A. system.

WORKSHOPS: designed for one class size at a time, with hands-on maths that every student will do themselves. House Of Maths offers a range of workshops exploring pattern, Monopoly board game, mathematical puzzles, 3-D shapes and probability, each thoroughly road-tested and tailored to the age group.

YOUR PRESENTER: A former Champion of Countdown, Barney is an experienced mathematician and entertainer who also has a first in maths from Oxford University.

Expected outcomes

After a House Of Maths School Visit, students will appreciate that:

  • Maths is the study of number, shape and patterns, and that Pattern is where the best maths happens. At Secondary level, algebra is merely the language of patterns.
  • Maths is really useful for a range of jobs, and a mathematical way of thinking is an essential life skill for us all.
  • Maths doesn't have to be useful to be fun - it's ok to enjoy it for its own beauty!
  • Maths isn't just about memorising results, it's also about creativity, playfulness, collaboration and imagination.

A House of Maths School Visit will boost the profile of maths in school for both students and staff. The visit aims to both reinforce core maths skills, and leave students with a new sense of wonder and curiosity as they see some maths that supplement what they usually see in the classroom.
