How to train a computer: Artificial Intelligence for KS2 and KS3
Overview
In this fun and hands-on 90-minute workshop, pupils learn how computers are taught to identify objects and why they don't always get the answer correct.
Bespoke software lets children create their own Machine Learning (ML) systems – a common type of Artificial Intelligence - and then compete in teams to evaluate and improve their accuracy. Pupils also use Generative AI to create amazing images, in a safe moderated environment. Older pupils consider the ethics of facial recognition systems and explore a simulation showing the challenge of balancing sensitivity and precision. In-between the practical activities and quizzes, pupils see real-world applications of AI from medicine to self-driving cars and AI-generated music.
Logistics
Each workshop can accommodate approximately 30 pupils split across ten teams. Pupils create and use real AI without needing to do any coding, ensuring the activities are accessible to everyone and require no prior knowledge. I provide all the computing equipment for the teams and just require a classroom or hall with desks and a screen/projector.
The content is aimed at Years 5, 6, 7 & 8, although Year 4 will enjoy it too. I have experience of working in Alternative Provision schools and can adjust content to meet the needs of SEN and AP pupils. As of November 2023, I have delivered the workshops to over 1,100 pupils with 97% positive feedback.
All pupils can list the stages of Machine Learning(ML), have applied ML to train a computer to distinguish between two categories of objects, and compared its performance with other computers.
Most pupils have observed how the performance of ML systems can be improved by increasing the variety and quantity of training data.
Some pupils have discussed the implications of letting Machine Learning systems make decisions or generate new content.
