Science in a Suitcase

Maths in a Suitcase

Science in a Suitcase transforms the school hall into its own science centre where everyone gets to visit.

Science in a Suitcase is part science show and part science lab where the children conduct their own experiments - the whole experience is about pupil participation – it’s not sitting and listening, it’s doing.

The hands on exhibits and activities enhance, enrich and compliment the delivery of the science curriculum. The experiments and investigations are designed so that children know what to do intuitively. Children (and teachers) are able to use the hands on activities to explore a whole range of different scientific phenomena.

Science in a Suitcase is a real smorgasbord of science activities. The 30+ different experiments cover a range of topics - so there are things on light and colour, things on forces - gravity, balancing forces and moving forces, experiments to do with the relationship between magnetism and electricity, their investigations around sound.

It provides hands on experiments and activities that are suitable for a wide age range – for Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2. Everything is designed to be accessible at some level to everyone regardless of age, ability, experience or gender. In addition, each session begins with a demonstrations tailored to each group’s needs and abilities

Depending on the school timetable it should be possible to fit in five or six sessions in the day.

Expected outcomes

The children do the demonstrations!

The ethos behind Science in a Suitcase is to develop investigative skills, to notice different phenomena, to question and to conjecture.

For staff, it is an opportunity to observe their children in a different learning environment. This occasionally highlights different learning styles that may inform future teaching methods, (and there are also lots of ideas for teachers to copy.)
