Revised Nuffield Chemistry Stage II

Studies leading to the revision of Nuffield Chemistry showed that the introduction of topics that had seemed revolutionary in the mid-60s (such a structure, rates, energy changes and chemical equilibrium) had been widely accepted as desirable. However, the research done with teachers showed that the conceptual demands at the start of Stage II were high – too high for many students. For this reason an alternative route through Stage II was devised to introduce difficult ideas more gradually.

Another change was to pay more attention to the use of mathematics in chemistry including the use of graphical methods to display and analyse the results of quantitative experiments. The structure of the publications was also changed. The Handbook for Pupils was intended to meet the demand for a textbook while not compromising the enquiry-led spirit of the course. The many Background Books produced for the first edition of Stage II were revised and edited to create a single volume called Chemists in the World.
