Graphing stories

The ‘Graphing Stories’ collection is a collaborative project run by Dan Mayer and the ‘BuzzMath’ team. Each story comprises a video that shows a practical situation where a measure, such as height or weight, varies with time. The situation is then replayed at a slower rate to help enable the viewer to assess more...

Height

A tennis ball is dropped from a height of 3 feet. The ball is shown bouncing on the ground. The challenge is to graph the height of the tennis ball against time. The resulting graph is parabolic with the amplitude showing a decrease each time.

Height of stack

A stack of cups is shown. Cups are then added to the stack. Part way through the rate at which cups are added is increased. The challenge is to graph the height of the stack against time.

Height of waist off ground 1

A person is shown climbing to the top of a playground slide. They pause at the top and then slide down the slide.  The end of the slide has an upwards turn for safety. The task is to graph the height of the person’s waist off the ground against time.

Height of waist off ground 2

A person is shown on a swing. They swing back and forth at a constant rate and reach. After several swings, the person jumps off the swing and comes to rest. The challenge is to graph the height of their waist against time. The resulting graph is parabolic and periodic with a constant section at the end.

Height off ground

A computer animation is shown that features a character. The character jumps and disappears through various ‘holes’ before reappearing on the screen at various heights. The challenge is to graph the height of the character against time.

Linear graphs

This sub-collection of resources from the ‘Graphing Stories’ collection contains situations that give rise to linear graphs. Some of the graphs contain proportional relationships, whist others show just linear relationships.

Non-linear graphs

This sub-collection of resources from the ‘Graphing Stories’ collection contains situations that give rise to non-linear graphs. Additionally, some of the situations result in parabolas or graphs that are periodic.

Ponies in frame

The initial frame of the video shows a toy pony. As time progresses additional ponies are added to the scene. At the end, all of the ponies are taken away. The challenge is to graph the number of ponies in the frame against time. The resulting graph is one with discontinuities.

Size of hand

The video shows a deck of cards being dealt between four people. The cards are handed out at a constant rate. The challenge is to graph the number of cards per person (‘size of hand’) against time.
