Nuffield Secondary Science: Theme 2 - The Continuity of Life

This Nuffield Secondary Science theme deals with the continuity of life, not only in the short term from generation to generation, but also in the long term, when the cumulative picture of many generations appears to indicate an evolution. As a result, the theme includes two very important concepts related to variation between human beings: human genetics and evolution.

Areas for investigation This theme involves more interpretation of second-hand data than other themes. In this theme the broad areas include:

*life histories for animal and plant life including aspects of embryology and parental care

*genetics to answer the question ‘Why am I as I am?’ and to find out how commercial breeders of plants and animals apply the science

*evidence for evolution and some implications of the theory.

Fields of study 2.1 The manner of animal and plant reproduction and propagation 2.2 Inheritance 2.3 The process of evolution
