Nuffield Secondary Science: Theme 4 - Harnessing Energy

The Nuffield Secondary Science theme suggests a wide range of experiences and investigations from which the idea of energy conservation can gradually emerge. The resources, like other 1960s Nuffield programmes, describe energy changes in terms of energy conversions from one form to another, rather than in terms of energy transfers as is generally preferred now.

Areas for investigation
The information in the theme book provides detailed practical advice and guidance related to a wide range of investigations. In this theme the broad areas include:
*energy conversions in a range of contexts
*the units for measuring forces, work and power
*rates of energy conversion and the impact of large rats on lifestyles and standards of living
*the importance of electrical apparatus at home and at work
*energy efficiency and the ‘unavailability’ of energy in some of its forms.

Fields of study
4.1 Energy in action
4.2 Man’s energy: his physical limitations and use of machines
4.3 Electrical transmission of energy
4.4 Problems of bringing energy to bear.
