Composites: Designing Materials for the Future

This booklet is part of the ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ series published by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). Composites are made by physically combining two or more materials. Many composite materials are used to provide strength and rigidity while using thinner, lighter components. However, they are also being developed for their ability to provide specific combinations of properties and functions, not simply for their mechanical properties. The booklet provides an overview of some of the types, properties and uses of composite materials, linking classroom activities to real-life applications. The Composites booklet contains an illustrated overview of the topic with suggestions for teachers on how to introduce the ideas in the classroom, plus student activity sheets and notes for teachers and technicians. The downloadable resources include:

  • Student activities: zip files containing the activity sheets in PDF and editable Word formats
  • PowerPoint presentations: these contain a complete set of the images used in the booklet and activity sheets
