Understanding Fractions

This resource from Teachers TV features Ian George, Deputy Headteacher at Janvrin School in Jersey, as he leads a training session to introduce new teacher Patrick to the technique for teaching mathematics, which the school has adopted.

Many students have problems visualising fractions abstractly and here we see paper cups being used to concretely represent halves and quarters. Moving the cups between two places, a resources table and a maths table, makes addition and subtraction clear.

The training progresses to calculations which use multiplication. This is initially demonstrated using whole cups before introducing fractions and, to calculate the total, pieces of cups are glued together.

Performing the process himself provides Patrick with valuable insight into the delivery of the techniques he will be using in lessons and the stumbling blocks he is likely to encounter.
