LSS Skill Area 5 Training: Scientific Writing

Produced by the Science Enhancement Programme (SEP), these materials are aimed at facilitators who are preparing to lead Learning Skills for Science (LSS) training courses with colleagues. This resource looks at the training connected to skills in scientific writing. The trainers' manual and supporting presentations are included.

Following the training, teachers will:
• Be familiar with the LSS resources on ‘Scientific Writing’.
• Have a range of strategies to plan, differentiate, teach and assess the skills required for
scientific writing in the Secondary classroom.
• Be able to familiarise students with the structure and characteristics of several kinds of
texts that are commonly used in the scientific community: abstract, scientific essay,
research article, review article.
• Be able to provide students with experience in writing different types of scientific texts of the kind they will be required to write in school.
• Be able to support students in acquiring basic writing skills: creating headings and
subheadings, planning a logical sequence for the text, combining information from
several sources.
• Be able to support students to arrive at an understanding of the characteristics of good
writing through the use of assessment for learning strategies.
