Bionic Limbs
Richard Hirons, a clinical specialist in prosthetics, explains how engineers are designing prosthetic limbs which can reproduce normal sensory and motor control for amputees by combining sensors, artificial intelligence, motors, electronics, software and accelerometers.
Mark Woods, a paralympic gold medalist, explains how his prosthetic limb helps him to go trekking in Nepal. There is a range of disciplines involved in the design process, including the mechanics of building prototype limbs, electronic and computer engineering and looking at the clinical applications of this technology.
This video, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), highlights careers in engineering and supports a full set of resources on the use of modern materials and the development of prosthetic limbs. These resources can be found in the Nature Reinvented sub-collection.
