Developing as a leader of mathematics professional development MY217 / A16
Summary
A two day residential activity, run in conjunction with MEI, designed for confident teachers of A level mathematics who wish to develop experience in leading PD. This course will support participants in developing as a leader of PD.
It is intended that participants will previously either have undertaken significant A level PD themselves (for example, the FMSP's Teaching Advanced Mathematics course, managed by MEI) or be an NCETM accredited level 3 PD lead.
During these two days, participants will experience the course they are to lead with GCSE teachers (called 'Differentiation: stretching the most able) as well as having time to reflect on the most effective way to do this.
Aspiring course leaders should give details of any PD which thy have undertaken or lead on the application form, as well as giving details of how they hope to disseminate the material shared with them beyond their own school. Existing contacts with schools and/or maths hubs should be made clear.
The two day course for Leaders is a residential course, fees include meals and accommodation for the duration of the course. Course fees vary for participants outside the UK. Please contact enquiries@stem.org.uk for more information.
Outcomes
As a result of this activity the participants will:
- develop strategies, as a leader of professional development (PD), to enable teachers not familiar with teaching A level to gain insight into how mathematics concepts are developed beyond the GCSE syllabus to help teachers inform their GCSE lesson planning.
- have structured support in developing the required skills to successfully deliver mathematics CPD
- gain an understanding of how the PD course 'differentiation: stretching the most able at GCSE' can be delivered
- develop ideas to enable teachers to identify opportunities to incorporate activities in their scheme of work showing how GCSE topics are developed at A level
