Developing and assessing practical competences in the new A level biology RA510 / C01
Summary
This course is designed to prepare teachers to make effective use of practical work in the new A level science courses and use them to improve outcomes for students
The incoming A level courses involve practical skills being developed and assessed in a different way. The stipulated activities are expected to be integrated with the teaching of topics so that they support the development of concepts and provide opportunities for a range of competencies to be developed and assessed. However, 15% of the marks in the final exams will also be based on these practical tasks and so teaching needs to ensure that students are prepared for these. The course looks at how the activities can be run effectively, used to support the awarding of the practical endorsement and to improve exam grades.
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- support the development of the required practical competencies so that students master a range of skills, become effective laboratory practitioners and can be awarded the endorsement
- prepare students effectively for the assessment items in the external exam that are based on the stipulated practical tasks
- use the stipulated practical tasks and other investigations to improve students’ command of a range of concepts
