Introduction to microtomy HC430 / D02
Summary
This course provides you with hands on skills and experience in microtomy techniques utilising formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue. Under guidance of experienced staff, you will produce paraffin blocks containing pig heart, liver and kidney. You will then cut 5um sections of tissue on a microtome, and stain these sections to confirm tissue orientation and quality of the section. Human tissue blocks are readily available from suppliers in the UK and sections can be cut in the same way. This course has both teaching and research applications, as in house production of tissue sections represents a significant cost saving and also enables the production of sections from unique tissues.
This course is recommended for research and teaching technicians.
A background in biology including knowledge of tissue morphology is expected.
Please note there are potential hazards during this course: Stains/solvents/microtome with sharp blade.
