Summary

How do children in the EYFS access and explore the key question of scientific discovery, enquiry and knowledge? How do we provide for and teach this vital aspect of learning in a way that is appropriate, inspiring and motivating the scientists of tomorrow?

This session will address how to view science through the lens of the ‘otherness’ of the EYFS, looking at how we can provide the appropriate pedagogy and profession of knowledge, skills and enquiry to enable and empower young children as scientists.

Additionally, we will share learning from our recent Early Years project and consider the learning opportunities created by practitioner interactions with young children which extend vocabulary and improve language development through curiosity and investigation in science.

Outcomes

  • Explore what science looks like in EYFS
  • Extend knowledge around key questions in science, EYFS curriculum progression, child-led activities and direct teaching
  • Consider how to develop the language and vocabulary of science
