We know there's an increased mathematical demand in in both the GCSE and A level chemistry specifications. This course explores a range of teaching and learning strategies for successful integration of mathematics skills in A level chemistry to develop deeper understanding of mathematics and chemistry concepts. We'll discuss how to support students to apply their GCSE mathematics knowledge in an A level context - and learn the mathematics behind the chemistry in order to teach for understanding.

Who is it for?

Teachers of chemistry who are currently teaching A level, are familiar and confident with the A level chemistry curriculum and want to develop their understanding of the mathematics underpinning the chemistry content

What topics are covered?

This two-day course covers:

  • Supporting students to apply GCSE mathematics skills in A level chemistry
  • Graphs: finding gradients and equations, and applying this to the rate reaction
  • The mathematics behind the pH scale
  • The mathematics underpinning the Arrhenius equation
  • Techniques to develop mathematical reasoning, problem solving and resilience
  • Not sure yet? Here is a free taster which will give you a better understanding of what to expect once you join the course. Please note, this is a free short activity you can do in your own time.
