Developing effective health and safety in practical work for ECTs NY331

Summary

Starting out in your first few years of teaching practical science can be daunting. Build your confidence in effective health and safety practice in the school lab so you can plan, prepare and carry out high quality practical activities. Health and safety is not about stopping anyone doing practical work, but supporting you in doing it well, that helps students learn both the science and life skills. This course takes a pragmatic approach to health and safety in the science classroom to enable you to focus on purposeful practical work that is successful.

You will have the opportunity to explore how key skills can be effectively taught to students, as well as tackling some of the more challenging key stage 3 and GCSE practicals. The course will look at how practical skills are developed across the 11-16 age range and into post-16 study also.

Demonstrations are a key skill for science teachers, and you will experience a wide range of hands-on demonstrations, where you will explore the underlying learning outcomes, as well as the health and safety issues that arise. Managing the practical space, both for effectiveness of practical work, but also for learning and behaviour management is key, and drawing on your experiences so far, we will support you with how you can further embed good practice. Learn to deal with incidents, including immediate remedial measures, fire safety and recording and reporting, so that you feel confident in all aspects of leading purposeful practical science.
