Cutting edge science: genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) NC212

Discover the latest research in AI and genomics and ways to bring this to the classroom

Summary

Developed with support from Wellcome Connecting Science and DeepMind, this is an exciting opportunity to learn how new advances in machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is contributing to revolutionary breakthroughs in the field of genomics. These include protein and gene engineering, prediction of DNA methylation, interpreting molecular structures, medical image recognition, gene expression profiling and prediction of disease associated genome mutations.

This inspirational course, who will be delivered by Fran Gale and Alison Ackroyd, will enable teachers to understand some of the latest developments at the cutting edge of research and bring this back to the classroom. You will hear from lead scientists about their research, participate in hands-on practical activities and receive expert guidance on how to link AI and genomics research to the curriculum.

Genomics is featured in various KS4 and KS5 specifications, including GCSE Biology, A-Level Biology, BTEC Level 3 Applied Science and T Level Science. This course is aimed at teachers of these qualifications or teachers of computing with a strong interest in the field of genomics. It will assume some understanding of basic principles -  it is highly recommended for teachers wishing to provide students with a stimulating and rich educational experience that goes beyond specification content.

Please note that accommodation is included and in addition to the ENTHUSE subsidy participants from eligible schools will receive £100.00 towards travel expenses which will be paid to your school on completion of the course. For further information on subsidies see here.
