Bge chemistry and physics NS232

This course will explore a range of practical activities and techniques to support the delivery of BGE Chemistry & Physics.

Summary

This course will explore a range of practical activities and techniques to support the delivery of BGE Chemistry & Physics so that all science teachers can cover these parts of their BGE curriculum confidently and safely.

Who is it for?

Primarily non chemistry and physics teachers teaching chemistry & physics at BGE.

What topics are covered?

See outcomes

How will you learn?

F2F talks, practical demonstrations and supported hands-on experiments.

How long is this course?

2 days

Outcomes

The chemistry sessions will cover SCN-15a&b, 16a&b, 17b, 18a and 19a&b and will  include:

  • how to carry out some common demonstrations safely and effectively. (Eg alkali metals, methane bubbles, whoosh bottle etc..
  • hands-on sessions on some of the common experiments carried out at this level (Elements compounds & mixtures, solvents and solubility, states of matter, simple chemical tests, acids, alkalis & indicators and more
  • details of the skills required at this level. Handling chemicals safely, using the Bunsen and other heating equipment, Quickfit glassware, electrolysis etc.

In the Physics session, topics covered will include:

  • the Van de Graff generator (safety, setting-up, safe use in the class, accessories, static electricity in general and fun experiments)
  • multimeters (selection, set-up and use). Electrical circuits (series & parallel circuits, measuring current and voltage, simple theory and fault-finding in these circuits) SCN 3-09a
  • forces (simple experiments to demonstrate tricky concepts, an introduction to Newton’s laws of motion, road safety, using newton balances) SCN 3-08a, SCN 4-08b
  • the electromagnetic spectrum(refraction of light, colour mixing, radiations beyond the visible) SCN 3-11b
