New to leading primary STEM? Explore the basics of creating a vision for STEM, audit current provision and develop strategies to raise the profile of STEM in your school.


Summary

This course has been specifically designed for teachers new to leading primary STEM.

You will receive guidance, advice and support to help you develop a full and varied curriculum that not only focuses on the curriculum basics, but introduces pupils to learning that they may not encounter in their everyday lives.

You will work with experienced primary teachers to learn about how they have successfully led change in their schools. You will also develop techniques to lead a team and ensure good pupil progress at a whole school level.

Over three days, you will build your confidence and develop the expertise to support your colleagues to deliver an effective and engaging STEM curriculum.

This course may support you with Science Leadership Benchmark 1 - Leadership and vision for science.

Who is it for?

Subject leaders in any area of primary STEM who are new to the role, or who aspire to move into it.

STEM subject leads who have been in the role for up to 2 years.

This three day course covers:

  • what is STEM?
  • working with the primary curriculum
  • developing engineering habits of mind
  • maths in STEM
  • science in STEM
  • context based learning
  • creating a STEM club
  • computer assisted projects
  • planning for a STEM school
  • STEM projects and Makerspaces
  • supporting your colleagues to embed your vision for STEM

How will you learn?

Face to face sessions at the National STEM Learning Centre in York.

How long is this course?

This is a three day residential course.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • develop strategies to embed your vision for primary STEM in your school
  • lead improvement in the quality of STEM teaching and learning within your school
  • develop and structure your role as a leader of primary STEM
