Active Teaching and Learning Approaches in Science (ATLAS)

Active Teaching and Learning Approaches in Science (ATLAS) was a curriculum development project organised by the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University. The project drew upon the expertise, ideas and suggestions of many science and non-science teachers, educators and expert practitioners from around the country. The project was influenced by the work of the Children's Learning in Science (CLIS) and Science and Technology in Society (SATIS).

Rationale
While developing the resources the project team was guided by two important principles:
* First, that students learn best when they find the learning experience enjoyable and worthwhile, and when they are actively involved in the learning process.
* Second, that teachers are likely to be more effective if they use a range of strategies which provide a variety of active learning experiences for the students.
