Nuffield Home Economics 14-16

The Nuffield Home Economics project extended the Basic Course by preparing a series of publications for students aged 14-16. Scientific aspects of the subject continued to feature strongly in the teaching. As before, the four areas of study were:
* Food science
* Nutrition
* Fibres and Fabrics
* People and Homes

For the programme for older students, the four areas of study were given separate students’ books, each with its separate teachers' guide. This arrangement was intended to allow students to specialise in the areas of study of their choice and to develop further the skills and concepts met in the Basic Course.

The choice of topics
The following criteria were adopted in selecting the particular topics to be taught in the course. They were that the content should be:
* central to home economics teaching
* up-to-date, reflecting changing technology
* scientifically accurate and developing a scientific approach
* activity-based
* realistic in an average school using existing facilities
* able to give some idea of career possibilities in home economics
* relevant to both boys and girls
* appropriate to a multi-cultural society.

Publications
For each area of study there was a separate students’ text and teachers' guide. A pack of worksheets and assessment cards was also available for each area (but these packs are not yet included in the eLibrary). The students’ books were designed to give the greatest possible flexibility.
