There are three themes in these materials:

  • Substances: This introduces the idea of a substance by looking at properties and establishing that a substance can be in any of three states. A basic particle model is introduced.
  • Mixtures of substances: This explores phenomena involving the mixing and un-mixing of substances: evaporation and condensation into and out of the air, dissolving and solubility, diffusion, and separation techniques. The particle model is extended to include the idea of energy distribution at a temperature.
  • Changing substances: This develops the idea of atoms to predict the possibility of substances changing into new substances. A variety of chemical changes of increasing complexity are explored.

Stuff and Substance is a multimedia package developed by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). Using videos and animation it emphasises the important interplay between observable phenomena and particle explanations. It aims to address the difficulties many students have in understanding fundamental ideas in chemistry because they lack the concept of a substance. Chemistry is all about substances, but standard approaches in chemistry teaching often tend to assume the concept of a substance is unproblematic. This ‘Teachers’ Resources’ section includes the individual video and animation files separately in order to allow flexibility in their use.

The complete Stuff and Substance multimedia package provides a series of interactive pages that can be used by teachers or students in the classroom, including supporting commentary and questions, animations, videos, images, and teachers’ notes. There is also a booklet for teachers, Stuff and Substance: Ten Key Practicals in Chemistry.
