Nuffield Physics: Year V

In the preface to Year V of Nuffield Physics, the authors show how they considered the programme to be suitable as a basis for developing what we now might call scientific literacy, as well as preparing for more advanced study of physics.

The project team argued that a citizen in a scientific world, should neither be afraid of science nor be overawed by it. He, the team wrote, should realise that natural phenomena usually have a rational explanation and that scientific methods can be powerful tools in understanding and controlling man's environment. In other words, he should have an educated person's knowledge of what science is. This, according to the authors of the scheme was the end to which their scheme was directed. In their view, the details of which topics they chose to include was relatively unimportant. The aim was to teach a representative sample of physics, not the whole of it.

Year V topics
1. Motion in an orbit
2. Electrons in orbits
3. The Grand Theory
4. Oscillations and waves
5. Light waves
6. Radioactivity
7. Waves and particles

Nuffield Physics: Teachers’ Guide V

Year V of Nuffield Physics was planned as the culmination of the five-year programme by linking important experiments and ideas. The year called for more imaginative thinking, more reasoning, and new experimenting. The aim was to develop some taste for theory and to...

Nuffield Physics: Guide to Experiments V

This Nuffield Physics Guide to Experiments was designed to supplement Teachers' Guide V by giving details of the class experiments and demonstrations to be done during the fifth year of the Nuffield O-level physics programme. A special feature of the guides was the very clear, three-dimensional diagrams of the...

Nuffield Physics: Questions Book V

In Nuffield Physics constructive problems or questions that ask for active thinking largely took the place of pupils' reading in texts or background books. The purpose and nature of these questions was explained in chapter 1 of Nuffield Physics Tests and Examinations..

Nuffield Physics Background Book: Astronomy

This Nuffield Physics Background Book on astronomy uses a narrative to guide the reader through the development of theory in astronomy, from early ideas and Greek astronomy, through to the work of Kepler and Newton. Many hand-drawn diagrams are used to illustrate the concepts and suggestions for student activities...
