Targeting Level 4 in Year 7: Section Three - Algebra Lessons

The Algebra lessons, from the Targeting Level 4 programme by the National Strategies, are designed to support teachers working with year seven students who need to consolidate work at level three and extend into level four. The lessons, which are quite detailed, focus on teaching strategies to address the stated learning objectives. They also provide support for teaching assistants working under the supervision of a teacher.

The lessons are organised in units of work corresponding to the year seven intervention plan. Each lesson includes material to support about 30 to 40 minutes of direct teaching.

The topics include lessons on rules and formulae, solving simple equations, making general statements about odd and even numbers, recognising square numbers to at least one hundred, expressing simple functions in words, generating and describing terms of a simple sequence including sequences from practical contexts, recognise and use multiples, factors and primes, know and use the order of operations, including brackets.
