For World Photography Day, Samantha Watson, STEM Ambassador and Senior Radiation Protection scientist shares her love of photography.

I often tell people that one of the great things about working in science is that every day brings something a bit different, and there is always something new to learn, so it keeps being interesting and fun. Having said that, I do like to do other things in my spare time – so what do I do for fun outside of my job?

One thing I am passionate about is photography. I’ve had a “fancy” camera for over 30 years now – since well before the time of mobile phones and digital photography. Personally, I prefer to use a “proper” camera (I have a Nikon D5300 with a selection of lenses) rather than the camera on my phone, but I do appreciate it’s not for everyone. At the end of the day the camera is just a tool, a means to an end. Whatever type of camera you use there is great joy in being creative and recording interesting images.

I like to photograph a range of subjects. Favourites are gardens, animals, buildings, travel, festivals, and people, though I’m not as keen on landscape photography. Whatever the subject though, I often find I’m looking for patterns and shapes. I think I still have a bit of scientific thought at the back of my mind even when I’m primarily being creative. And if I need to take a photo for scientific purposes I still try to make a pleasing image. There is a definite overlap between scientific/technical ideas and creativity, and I am possibly happiest when I get into that zone. I’ve been fortunate to visit science facilities and travel with my work and take some unusual photos. But wherever you are, there will be opportunities to get some interesting and beautiful images. So get out there, have fun and let World Photography Day prompt you to explore the wonderful world of creativity with a little help from science.

Sam was also kind enough to share some of her favourite photos that she's taken.
