Years 5 & 6: Place value
This list consists of visual resources, activities and games designed to support the new curriculum programme of study in Years Five and Six. Containing tips on using the resources and suggestions for further use, it covers:
Year 5: Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit, count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1,000,000, interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through zero, round any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000, solve number problems and practical problems that involve all of the above, read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals.
Year 6: Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000 and determine the value of each digit, round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy, use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across zero, solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above.

Using Directed Numbers in Context N8
This resource provides a lesson in which children understand and use negative numbers in the context of
temperatures. Looking at the temperatures of different cities, they find missing temperatures and temperature differences. Temperature scales are provided which could help children who need a visual representation of temperature changes. An interactive thermometer for use on interactive whiteboards may be useful when teaching this lesson.
Round the Three Dice
This NRICH activity uses three dice to create different three-digit numbers. The six possible numbers are then rounded to the nearest 100. This is repeated in order to investigate the following questions:
Can each of the six numbers round to the same multiple of 100?
Can each of the six numbers round to a different multiple of 100?
This activity looks at numbers which include a decimal place.
