A college-wide approach to Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Published in 2009 by LSIS, this report describes an action research project by John Leggott College. The project used a range of qualitative methods such as focus groups, interviews and thematic analysis to identify what was ‘wrong’ with current college systems and to develop ‘learning skills’ in students on Level 3 courses.

Findings were used to identify the advantages of moving to a system of recording Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and to test out such an approach on learners. A fresh approach to skills development was also developed in the pastoral system to contribute to enhanced UCAS applications, with more focus on the skills universities and employers want.
