Colour Mixing
From Solar Spark, this simple demonstration shows the effect of adding colours. Photos and pictures are often made up from just four colours black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Different amounts of each colour combine to get all the colours of the rainbow and make the complete picture.
Solar cells are optimised so that they are better at absorbing one colour better than another. A tandem cell is made up of a few solar cells connected together, each one absorbing a different colour. This allows the tandem cell to absorb the whole rainbow of colours and give us more electrical energy from the sun.
To use the images supplied, open each one using Internet Explorer and print onto overhead projector sheets. This activity can be used to illustrate:
* properties of light
* absorption
* transmission
