Equality
This activity requires students to calculate net income after tax and national insurance have been deducted. Students then are asked to discuss if the progressive taxation system is fair. Answers to each of the calculations are available.
The presentation shows how income tax and national insurance rates are applied, and links to two YouTube clips to aid discussion as students decide on their own tax regime. Students are then asked to decide on tax thresholds in the UK in order to raise a certain amount of tax revenue. Students can use the data supplied in slide eight. Access to a spreadsheet is recommended.
The teachers' notes provide ideas for possible approaches and extensions to the task.
