Issue 1: Ideas for the Classroom - Odd One Out

A resource from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) online FE magazine which is aimed at educators interested in or teaching in the further education sector or post-16 education generally.

Odd one out, is an activity that aims to promote discussion and observation, encouraging a wider perspective and leading to deeper learning. The contexts presented here include equations, number properties and triangles.

Although short, the activities can be used in many ways, to provide discussion and use of correct terminology and vocabulary. They can be used to assess learners and bring out misconceptions, and also to emphasis the importance of justifying mathematical reasoning.
