Planning and Managing Progression in Science Training Materials

These Key Stage Three National Strategy training materials from the Department for Education are designed to run a session with school science department Subject Leaders with overall responsibility for the Key Stage Three science scheme of work.

Components
*Session 1 - Introduction to planning and managing progression:
Participants are given an overview of progression using the Framework for Teaching Science: Years Seven, Eight and Nine and consider what is taught in Key Stage Two, followed by progression in terms of the five key ideas, scientific enquiry, and literacy, numeracy and thinking skills in the context of science. They review how they think progression is planned for in their own scheme of work and attention is drawn to the expected attainment levels for most students by the end of the key stage.

*Session 2 - Progression in the key scientific ideas:
This session gives participants a chance to consider and discuss in some detail progression in the five key ideas. A reminder about effective planning for progression and sequencing the teaching of energy and the other key ideas, and compare with the yearly objectives from the Framework for Teaching Science: Years Seven, Eight and Nine.

*Session 3 - Progression in scientific enquiry:
Participants produce a ‘map’ of a teaching sequence for scientific enquiry by annotating the National Curriculum Programme of Study statements and allocating them to Years Seven, Eight and Nine.

*Session 4 - Planning what to do next:
Participants consider how to disseminate ideas to the whole department and support individual teachers in developing their understanding.
