Evaluation of Starting Out: Final Report for the TDA

This resource contains an evaluation report on the two-year mentoring pilot programme for science and mathematics teacher trainees and early career teachers funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) which started in July 2009. 'Starting Out' was delivered by the Learning and Skills Network (LSN) and evaluated by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER). The pilot programme offered three levels of mentoring support: subject mentoring, e-mentoring and network mentoring so that mentees could choose the one most suited to their needs. The scheme aimed to increase trainees’ and teachers’ awareness and use of subject materials and resources, their engagement in subject learning communities and, ultimately, aimed to increase recruitment to the profession and support the greater retention of science and mathematics trainees and teachers.
