Secondary: Antibiotics and Medicines

Produced by the Health Protection Agency, this e-bug resource contains teacher guidance, stimulus materials and student activity suggestions. It looks at the treatment of infection by exploring the use of antibiotics and medicine in treating illness and infectious disease.

In a practical activity, acids and bases in agar plates are used to model the interaction between bacteria and antibiotics. As groups, students test a range of antibiotics (acid solutions) on bacteria (indicator in agar base) cultured from patient samples and determine which illness the patients have from a list provided.

An extension activity encourages students to research relevant current topics, such as drug-resistant bacteria, related to antibiotic use today.
