Teaching and Learning About the Environment - Pack 3

This Teaching and Learning About the Environment pack, from the University of York Science Education Group, contains lessons on five environmental topics. All the lessons are fully supported by photocopiable student materials and accompanied by detailed teachers' notes. The lessons were developed by working groups of schoolteachers, university lecturers in science and education departments and scientists working in industry.

*Building a Windfarm at Greyseas and Aires
A role play lesson in which students take the part of interested parties involved in a public meeting which considers plans to build a windfarm.

*Deforestation
A text-related activity in which practical work and role-play are used to consider the major ecological issue of deforestation and soil erosion.

*Energy Costs
The main teaching point of this data handling lesson is that every manufactured object has an energy cost. A loaf of bread is used as an example.

*Making Links
The causes of three major environmental phenomena (acid rain, global warming and ozone depletion) are looked at and some common misunderstandings tackled.

*Where Eagles Dare Not
Students act as investigative journalists in Scotland looking at changes in wildlife associated with the use of pesticides.
