Team Challenge
This video resource from Teachers TV features AST mathematics teacher Gary Morris, from William Parker Sports College in Hastings, as he delivers a Key Stage Four GCSE revision lesson which is intended to assess students' understanding of a recently completed module on statistical diagrams. Students work in teams and are given particular questions to answer within a specified time frame. Their answers are marked, but they have to identify any errors they have made themselves. Staff use key probing questions to enable students to think in the right direction, without leading them too much. A spreadsheet is used to display the teams' results to the class, thus creating a competitive element to the lesson, which can be applied to many different mathematical topics. Exam results have gone from 36 to 60 percent at A* to C since this style of lesson was introduced.
