Room for Improvement

Produced by The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC), this booklet contains a variety of practical investigations for children aged 8-10 which provide a focus for planning and carrying out science and technology based activities.

Set around the context of redecorating a bedroom, the activities encourage children to undertake the following investigations:
* Observing emulsions in foodstuffs and paints
* Painting a colour chart and providing a 'recipe' for each colour
* Testing a range of adhesives to find the most appropriate for hanging wallpaper
* Testing curtain gliders and rails to find the combination least affected by friction
* Using natural and synthetic dyes for dyeing fabric and comparing their colourfastness
* The effects of light, lampshades and the shadows they produce.

The materials contain extensive teacher guidance and activity sheets.
