Safety In Numbers

This is a Teachers’ TV programme from the series Painting with Numbers. In this episode Professor Marcus du Sautoy reveals how the language of mathematics is used to construct the complex codes that we encounter in everyday life, codes on mp3 players which allow us to store music, codes that allow us to search the internet and codes that keep our information safe when buying goods on line.

He begins by explaining how ISBN numbers work developing the concept of a check digit leading to an explanation of how error correction is used when receiving pictures from satellites deep in space. He then shows how prime numbers are used to code information to keep it safe and explains Euclid’s proof that there are an infinite number of prime numbers.
