Number Patterns
From the Nuffield Foundation, the module is primarily about simple number patterns which are explored on a number square. The teachers' notes indicate how the theory may be developed further and include some notions of modular arithmetic.
The resource consists of:
*Introduction: the teachers' notes and the suitability of the cards in the module for students with differing needs.
*A cards and notes: addition and subtraction patterns, complementary addition, use of the number square, multiplication as repeated addition using the number square.
*B cards and notes: patterns of multiples on the number square including notation such as M6 for the set of multiples of 6. Teachers' notes include the symbol for congruence and the notion of numbers being congruent modulo ‘n’.
The workcards are organised into two groups of cards A and B. Each card has detailed ‘Notes for the teacher’ and many cards have ‘Notes for the pupil’.
