Symmetry

From the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of this module is to develop understanding of line and rotational symmetry. Much of the work on line symmetry is based on paper folding activities and is quite practical.

The resource includes:

A cards and notes: introduction – looking at patterns and creating patterns by drawing and folding paper

B cards and notes: line symmetry, single and double folds – expects access to carbon paper

C cards and notes: further properties of shapes made by paper folding including multiple folds

D card and notes: this single card contains introductory work on tessellations

E cards and notes: reflection symmetry in 3D – initially focusing on the cube then extending to other shapes

F cards and notes: rotational symmetry – including axes of rotational symmetry of a cube

G card and notes: this card, identifying symmetries of signs and badges, is intended as an assessment.

‘Notes for the teacher’ follow the individual cards.
