Similarity 2

From the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of the module is to build on the Similarity module and extend the work, including more formal calculation, as far as the introduction of trigonometric rations.

The module includes:

*Notes for the teacher including a brief overview of the content of the workcards and references to other resources

*Cards 1-4: using ray diagrams to make shapes larger or smaller to a given scale factor

*Card 5: using ray diagrams on a grid to enlarge shapes

*Cards 6-7: scale diagram of a room, using scale diagrams to obtain information

*Cards 8-11: enlarging geometric shapes by drawing and calculating sizes of enlargements

*Card 12: make and use a clinometer

*Cards 13-20: develop basic notions of trigonometry, starting by considering increase in height when walking up a slope and ending with the sine function. The cards take a practical approach relying on a lot of simple measurement.

The cards are intended to be used sequentially. Each card has detailed ‘Notes for the teacher’ and most cards have ‘Notes for the pupil’.
