Science Education in Europe: Critical Reflections
The Nuffield Foundation convened two seminars involving science educators from nine European countries. The seminars were held in June and December of 2006. The seminars investigated the extent to which the issues of the decreasing interest of young people in science and technical subjects were common across Europe. The similarities and differences between countries were explored, with some attempted solutions and remedies.
The findings and recommendations are separated into two parts: The State of Science Education in Europe, and Improving School Science Education, in terms of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and teacher supply, professionalism and retention. The report suggests seven recommendations, with the aim that school science should offer “an education in science and not a form of pre-professional training”.
