National Curriculum - Task Group on Assessment and Testing Report

This booklet, published in 1988, was written in anticipation of the government passing the Education Reform Bill introducing the national curriculum to England and Wales. The new Bill would establish a new system of assessment of students’ progress. Written by the Task Group on Assessment and Testing, this publication summarises the proposed system of national curriculum levels and recommends ten levels of achievement and a move away from norm-referenced testing. The group go on to recommend at what ages reporting should take place. Consideration is given to whom the results should be reported and how the data can be used. The booklet concludes with forty four recommendations covering purpose and principles, the assessment system in practice and implementation.
