Lycopodium Powder

From the Teachers TV series Demonstrating Chemistry, this video shows how to safely create spectacular sheets of flame using lycopodium powder, a finely divided carbohydrate powder. Professor Hal Sosabowski, from Brighton University, tips some lycopodium powder onto a flame from a blow torch. This creates a large fireball, illustrating how a large surface area can increase the rate of reaction. The demonstration can also be carried out with fine coffee whitener or icing sugar. Safety tips are given at the end of the film.
