Learning with Nicole

This Teachers TV programme observes a science lesson from the viewpoint of a Year Six student, Nicole. Nicole begins the lesson by giving a PowerPoint presentation on plants in the school playground to the class with a question and answer session for the class.

The science lesson, at St Mary's Primary School in Harborne, focuses on designing and carrying out a fair test on the factors or variables a plant needs to grow and the conditions required for germination.

The class are divided into groups where they use post-it notes to plan their fair test, then use a collaborative approach to carry out the investigations. Nicole's group are investigating the effect different levels of light have on seedling growth.

The programme observes how Nicole learns and sees what parts of the activities she finds fascinating. It is also a good lesson to watch when considering how to teach fair testing across the whole of Key Stage Two.
