Summary
In an ever-changing landscape of secondary science assessment, how can we ensure that we are getting the most out of assessment to support the progress of students while also considering the well being of teachers?
During workshops, you will hear about practical, evidence-based approaches to assessment developed by a local ‘outstanding’ teaching school.
You will also hear from Tony Sherborne about how diagnostic information can be collected and used effectively to support mastery learning, in the context of a KS3 syllabus.
With a keynote from a former Ofqual consultant with her views on assessment.
Workshops will include:
- assessment and tracking of mindset to inform future planning and reduce workload
- using an evidence-based approach to assessment, feedback and marking to deliver impact and reduce workload
- using diagnostic information to asses students’ understanding of a big idea
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- consider how assessment of mindset can be used to inform planning while reducing teacher workload
- describe an assessment, feedback and marking evidence-based approach that could reduce teacher workload
- explore how diagnostic information can be collected and used to assess understanding
- plan to improve the effectiveness of assessment in your own setting

Notes
Meols Cop High School is a teaching school based in Sefton, Merseyside. Their professional development programmes have an emphasis on research, innovation and staff well being. It was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in its most recent inspection.
Tony Sherborne has developed the KS3 syllabus framework with AQA, based on big ideas. He is also the coordinator of the ‘ENGAGE’ project.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
