Technical Drawing Courses in Secondary Schools: an HMI Discussion Paper
This paper gives an account of a survey, carried out by HM Inspectors in 1980-81, looking at technical drawing and other drawing office based courses in secondary schools. They also visited 11 industrial companies and 15 institutions of further and higher education to discuss their expectations of students in terms of technical drawing skills and their view of the role that these skills in employment. The aim was to encourage discussion and reappraisal of the teaching of technical drawing.
Technical drawing was seen as complementary to CDT courses and became more prominent as graphic skills, design and graphic communications syllabuses were developed. The paper ends with an acknowledgement that technological developments such as computer-aided design (CAD) and computer graphicsmade the timing opportune for a reappraisal of technical drawing teaching in schools.
